陈末（曾一竣饰）因业绩超前被老板秦川（孙雪岩）带到酒吧放松，共青个持看到台上热舞的凌菲不禁陷入回忆，共青个持原来两人曾是情侣，因陈末家境贫寒被凌菲父亲当众羞辱，从此立誓发愤图强，有朝一日报复回去

日伪时期，团保女作家沈韶华（林青霞饰）在报纸上连载她的自传体小说《白玉兰》，很多情节感同身受。然而，山市设见到日本军人凌辱中国人，月凤顿觉章面目可憎。

终于，续强想道两人见面，一见钟情。此时，成年她的闺中密友月凤（张曼玉饰）因与男友（严浩饰）赌气，来找她倾诉。三人一起出游，人思感情很好。

某日，德建她接到了一位神秘的读者来信。共青个持本片根据三毛最后一部同名作品改编。

此后，团保时局动荡，日本投降，国共开战，韶华的情感经历了更加复杂的波澜……
